Sydney solicitors Tony Albert, John Beeston and James Halliday founded Brokenwood in 1970, purchasing a vineyard zoned as a cricket ground. Eight years later they bought the property next door, zoned for Pokolbin’s cemetery.
In the foothills of the Brokenback Ranges the heavy clay soils produce vines of low yield but extraordinary flavour. When winemaker Iain Riggs joined in 1982 he began white wine production, looking to new regions to supply a range of premium single vineyard wines. The Hunter Valley is renowned for its Semillon and Shiraz. Brokenwood supplements these varieties by sourcing grapes from as far afield as Beechworth and McLaren Vale.
Brokenwood is one of Australia's most reputable premium wine labels. It is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon and Mistress Block Vineyard Shiraz.
