At the Winery
Winery
Only two families have owned Best's. Goldrush butcher turned winemaker Henry Best founded the winery in 1866. Sold by his son to neighbour Frederick Thomson in 1920, today Best's is one of Australia's enduring family owned wineries.
Best's have some of the oldest vines in Australia. There are three vineyards: the original Concongella at Great Western, Salvation Hills close by at Rhymney and St Andrew's at Lake Boga. Unique factors of soil and climate explain Best's success. A long ripening period and a continental climate are characteristic of Great Western. Each vineyard produces distinctly different grape characteristics. At the winery the yield of each is treated as an individual site.
The lead Thomson Family Shiraz and Bin 0 Shiraz are made from the original 1868 vines. Best's new plantings have produced successful wines like House Block Riesling, White Gravels Hill Shiraz and Foudre Ferment Riesling.
