In 2002 geologist Steve Hall purchased Matilda's Meadow, a Denmark property first planted to vines in the 1980s. Following extensive refurbishments, including a new winery, Rockcliffe was established in 2013.

Rockcliffe takes its name from the nearby granite cliffs that dominate the eastern end of Denmark's main bay. The same granite also lies beneath the vineyard's fertile karri loam soils, producing distinct characteristics. Long afternoon sunshine and cool breezes from the Southern Ocean, which cool the vines all summer long, produce the slow ripening cool climate styles the region is known for. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lead, Rockcliffe being home to Denmark's oldest plantings.

Rockcliffe's Nautica wines lead, made only in years when fruit quality is sufficient. The Single Site wines, expressions of their vineyard and variety, are next in line followed by the Third Reef range.
