Winery
Giant Steps takes its name from the 1960 solo jazz album John Coltrane released after leaving Miles Davis. Phil Sexton took his giant steps in 1997 by moving to the Yarra Valley to start a new winery after founding Devil's Lair.
Acquired by Jackson Family Wines in 2020 Giant Steps continues under Phil Sexton’s management focusing chiefly on single vineyard Yarra Valley sites. They source fruit from their Sexton Vineyard in the Lower Yarra as well as from long term leased vineyards at varying elevations. Naturally low yields foster a hands off approach in the winery. Winemaker Steve Flamsteed vinifies the grapes with minimal intervention, each wine a faithful expression of its site.
Giant Steps wines are named for their vineyards. From Sexton Vineyard they make restrained Chardonnay and Pinot Noir; other highlights are its Primavera Pinot Noir, Tarraford Chardonnay and Applejack Pinot Noir.
