At the Winery
Winery
Pioneers of the wine industry in Frankland River, Merv and Judy Lange established Alkoomi in 1971. In 2010 the Langes' daughter Sandy and her husband Rod Hallett took ownership, building Alkoomi into one of the state's largest family operated wineries.
Alkoomi's red wines enjoyed early success. As Californian agronomist Dr Harold Olmo recognized in the 1950s, Frankland River's climate and soils are like those of Bordeaux in France. Just 80 kilometres inland from the Southern Ocean, Alkoomi's unique combination of gravelly loam soils, warm sunny days and cool nights during the ripening season produce grapes of intense varietal character.
The leading Icon range wines, including Blackbutt Cabernet and Jarrah Shiraz, are made from the oldest vines on the property. Alkoomi's Riesling helped establish the reputation of the Frankland River region for the variety.
