South Australian eccentric and cricketer Robert Strangways Wigley founded Wirra Wirra in 1894. After his death the winery fell into disrepair, then in 1969 cousins Greg and Roger Trott rebuilt it from its two remaining walls.
The nearby sea forms McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, tempering the summer heat and cold of winter. Wirra Wirra owns several vineyards including Scrubby Rise, Nocowie, Chook Block, Woodhenge and House Block. For nearly a decade they farmed these blocks sustainably, and in 2013 received biodynamic certification. Wirra Wirra sources the white varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling from the neighbouring Adelaide Hills, where the climate is cooler.
Wirra Wirra's RSW Shiraz, Chook Block Shiraz and The Holy Thirst Cabernet Shiraz are made from the best vintage parcels. The Angelus Cabernet and The Absconder Grenache vie for attention.
