Purchasing a Mount Barker farm Tony Smith founded Plantagenet in 1968. He converted an apple packing shed into the winery and cellar door. In 2021 Tom and Jo Wisdom became Plantagenet's new owners.
Among the first in the Great Southern region, Plantagenet's vineyards grow in marri soils of gravelly loam. Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have since joined the initial plantings of Shiraz and Cabernet. Tempered by proximity to the Southern Ocean, the climate is cool with abundant rainfall. Plantagenet practise sustainable viticulture and use limited chemicals. At the winery minimal intervention and judicial barrel ageing encourage varietal flavours and fine acidity to emerge naturally.
Plantagenet's Icon wines lead, made in a Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Wyjup Collection following on behind. The core Plantagenet wines are named after the English royal house.
