Winery
Dr Peter McMahon and wife Margaret planted Seville Estate in 1972. Their grandson Dylan McMahon is now chief winemaker. In 2016 Chinese businessman Yiping Yang, who owns a chain of wine stores in Guangxi province, acquired ownership.
The McMahons proved the then sceptics wrong by successfully growing cool climate Yarra Valley Shiraz. On a ridge of red volcanic soil overlooking the upper Yarra Valley, Seville Estate's vines are mainly dry grown. The vines face north-east at an altitude of 200 metres above sea level. The elevation provides cooler temperatures that allow the grapes to ripen later and more consistently than in other parts of the Yarra Valley.
Dr McMahon Shiraz is the original leading wine, now joined by a Pinot Noir. The Reserve range features a Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon from the winery's oldest vines.
