At the Winery
Winery
Kevin and Diana Cullen planted half a hectare of trial vines on their sheep and cattle property at Wilyabrup in 1966. By 1981 Diana had become Cullen's chief winemaker. Their daughter Vanya succeeded her in 1989.
On the advice of agronomist Dr John Gladstones, their foresight was to plant on one of the great Margaret River vineyard sites. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the lead varieties. Under Vanya Cullen the vineyard has gone from organic to biodynamic to carbon neutral certification. Grapes are harvested on fruit or flower days according to the astrological calendar. At the winery there are no additions of yeast, acid or malolactic culture.
Cullen is one of the first and most enduring of the celebrated Margaret River wineries. Their premium wines – Kevin John Chardonnay and Diana Madeline Cabernet – are named in honour of the winery's founders.
