Alex Head started Head Wines in 2006 inspired by his discovery of Shiraz from Côte Rôtie in France's Rhône Valley. Côte Rôtie (‘roasted slopes’) refers to the steep Rhône Valley Shiraz hillsides and the long hours of sunlight they receive.

For his unique Barossa Valley wines, Alex selected two vineyard sites where, like Côte Rôtie, the soils produce contrasting styles of Shiraz. The Blonde Shiraz, with its accentuated perfume and complexity, is grown on a slope in Stonewell in soils of sandy loam mixed with quartz on a limestone base; The Brunette Shiraz, from a high elevation vineyard in Moppa, is grown in heavy soils of deep red clay and ironstone.

Head Wines The Blonde and The Brunette Shirazes mirror the Côte Blonde and Côte Brune of the Rhône Valley. The Redhead Shiraz completes the hair salon trio. Other top drops are Ancestor Vine Grenache and Wilton Hill Shiraz.
