Winery
Established in Gippsland by Phillip Jones in 1979, Bass Phillip is named after the early explorers George Bass and Arthur Phillip. Bass Phillip is located at Leongatha in the most southerly part of Victoria.
In 2020 Jean-Marie Fourrier, owner of Domaine Fourrier in Burgundy’s Gevery Chambertin, took over the winemaking reins from Phillip Jones. The maritime climate of Bass Strait is ever present in the vineyard. Deep, mineral rich soils, high humidity in summer and very cool winter temperatures deliver complex and intense flavour, as well as firm natural acidity. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are low cropped, with ultra-close vine spacing and no irrigation. At the winery minimal intervention prevails.
Bass Phillip has an enviable reputation for making Australia's greatest Pinot Noir. A single vine at Bass Phillip barely makes half a bottle of wine. Their lead wines are Reserve Pinot Noir and Premium Pinot Noir.
