With the Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi as their mentor, Denis and Tricia Horgan founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. Starting in 1985 Leeuwin Estate is famous for staging spectacular events. Today son Justin and daughter Simone are in charge.
Originally a cattle property, the Leeuwin Estate vineyard was deep ploughed, emptied of stone, pegged, measured and eventually planted by hand over a five year period. Less than six kilometres from the ocean, the vineyard enjoys a temperate climate. Surrounded by karri forests, the vines are protected from extreme temperatures and remain frost free during the spring growing period. Leeuwin Estate produced its first commercial vintage in 1979.
Decanter Magazine gave its highest award to 1980 Art Series Chardonnay, thrusting Leeuwin Estate into the international spotlight. There are three ranges: Art Series are the finest wines from each vintage, followed by the Prelude and Siblings ranges.
