Yangarra Estate was planted by the Smart family in 1946. In 2000 Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson of California's Jackson Family Wines purchased the winery. The estate's original bush vines remain at the heart of the winemaking.
There were vineyards in the foothills near Yangarra Estate as far back as 1850. Yangarra Estate sources fruit solely from the dry farmed bush vines which surround the estate. The vineyard's diverse soils, coupled with McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate, provide the perfect conditions for the southern Rhône varieties such as Grenache, the winery's keystone variety. Since 2000 Peter Fraser has been the winemaker and driving force behind Yangarra Estate.
Yangarra Estate's leading High Sands Grenache is sourced from the original bush vines planted in 1946. Ironheart Shiraz is another red wine highlight, while Ovitelli Blanc and Roux Beauté Roussanne lead the whites.
