Reg and Bertina Egan planted Wantirna Estate in 1963, making it one of the oldest of the new generation producers in the Yarra Valley. Their daughter Maryann is now in charge of the winemaking.

Both father and daughter are inspired by the single vineyard, terroir driven wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux. The low yielding, dry farmed vineyard is managed meticulously. A large proportion of the grapes for their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot come from the original 1963 plantings. With no irrigation the roots go deep into the clay soil, searching out available moisture, adding to the intense yet elegant old vine flavours.

Wantirna Estate is a boutique winery with a tiny output and a dedicated following. Their highly aromatic but elegant Bordeaux style blends became cult classics in the 1980s. The wines are named after the Egans' granddaughters.
