After founding Mulderbosch in South Africa and building it into an international brand, Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson emigrated to Australia. They fell in love with the Adelaide Hills and in 2002 purchased Hahndorf Hill.
Hahndorf Hill is located near the German heritage Hahndorf township. They specialize in Austrian varieties, in particular Grüner Veltliner, producing South Australia's first Grüner Veltliner in 2010. The slow ripening, cool climate of the Adelaide Hills contributes significantly to the successful growing of the variety. Once a slate quarry, the vineyard has deposits of slate, quartz and ironstone, giving the wines distinct mineral character. In the vineyard the focus is staunchly on sustainability.
Pioneers of Grüner Veltliner, Hahndorf Hill produce the age worthy Reserve, the traditional GRU and the contemporary White Mischief, each a distinct style. Their Pinot Grigio, Rosé and Shiraz are also notable.
