Winery
Oenologist Sydney Hamilton, yearning to make a classic Australian Cabernet, established Leconfield in Coonawarra in 1974. He retired in 1981 and his nephew Dr Richard Hamilton bought the business.
The Leconfield vineyard is located in the southern half of the famous Coonawarra strip. It has some of the region's richest terra rossa soil over limestone, renowned for producing exceptional Cabernet. Coonawarra has a predominately maritime climate, with dry and moderately cool summer days and cool to cold nights. While the plantings are mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, there are small sections dedicated to other varieties including Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Riesling.
Leconfield's lead wine is its Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sydney Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is a true reserve wine, bottle aged before release. The Merlot a fine example of the variety.
