Stephen George established Ashton Hills in 1982, after 30 years as a winemaker at Wendouree. In 2015 Wirra Wirra acquired the property, with a commitment to continuing Stephen George's winemaking legacy.
The vineyard sits just below the summit of Mount Lofty on a ridge overlooking the Piccadilly Valley. It is 570 metres above sea level and has a cool climate with annual rainfall of 1,200 millimetres. It is dry grown and planted to five different clones of Pinot Noir as well as a small parcel – just eight rows – of top notch Riesling. Following Burgundian principles the winemaking is kept simple, with a focus on minimal intervention.
Ashton Hills is one of Australia's finest Pinot Noir producers. It also makes first rate Chardonnay and an outstanding Sparkling Shiraz with fruit sourced from Wendouree's acclaimed Shiraz vineyards in the Clare Valley.
