Ballarat architect Ewan Jones established Dalwhinnie in 1976 near the small town of Moonambel in the heart of the Pyrenees. Eldest son David and his wife Jenny have owned and managed the property since 1994.

At 595 metres above sea level, Dalwhinnie is the highest and most remote of the Pyrenees region vineyards. Surrounded by the highest range, and sheltered by it, the vineyard is an amphitheatre nestled into the range. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are planted. The terrain is classic gold mining country with quartz and decomposed slate soils over friable clays. The vineyard is well drained, low yielding and dry farmed.

Dalwhinnie's reputation is founded on their cool climate Shiraz, led by The Eagle Shiraz. The Pinnacle Shiraz and Moonambel Shiraz follow. They also make a distinctive Cabernet and Chardonnay.
