Biochemist Roman Bratasiuk established Clarendon Hills in 1990. At first not a winemaker, he was guided only by his palate and scientific know-how. His sons Alex and Adam are now the next generation at Clarendon Hills.
Clarendon Hills sources its grapes from dry grown pre-phylloxera bush vines from 19 sites in three districts: Clarendon, Blewitt Springs and Kangarilla. By contrast the Domaine Clarendon plantings grow in a radically designed new McLaren Vale vineyard at higher altitude. All vineyards are hand harvested with patches and individual rows picked separately. At the winery minimal intervention prevails, striving to express the unique varietal imprint of each vineyard.
Clarendon Hills makes striking single vineyard wines rivalling the best in the world. Their lead wine is Astralis Syrah. Other highlights include Piggott Range Syrah, Romas Grenache and Onkaparinga Syrah.
