In the 1850s the Golden Ball was a hotel popular with prospectors heading to the Beechworth goldfields. In 1996 current owners James and Janine McLaurin planted the first grapes and in 2002 released their first wines.
Set near a creek lined with weeping willows, Golden Ball's two vineyards grow in granitic soils. Their Original Vineyard has Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, while plantings in the newer Lineage Vineyard include Shiraz and Savagnin. The vines are low yielding, hand pruned and sparsely watered, resulting in small grapes with intense flavours. They use no insecticides and hand pick all vines. The entire winemaking process, from budburst to bottling, occurs onsite.
Golden Ball's lead la-bas Chardonnay is closely followed by their Saxon Shiraz. Also of note are the Gallice, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, and the bona fide Savagnin.
