The Kalleske family began growing grapes near Greenock in 1853, but it was not until six generations later, in 2002, that brothers Troy and Tony Kalleske made the first wine. They remain one of the Barossa Valley's leading grape growing families.
At 300 metres above sea level, the Kalleske vineyard is one of the Barossa Valley's highest. Predominantly planted to Shiraz, with Grenache and smaller amounts of alternate varieties, the vines grow on softly rolling hills and gullies. Gentle, cooling breezes ensure gradual ripening and full flavour. The low yielding Kalleske vineyard, certified since 1998, is the oldest organic and biodynamic vineyard in the Barossa Valley.
Kalleske's Johann Georg Shiraz honours the first Kalleske to migrate from Prussia. The other Old Vine range wines – Eduard Shiraz and Grenache – are also highlights. The Classic range is next in line.
