Johann Georg Shiraz
Wine
Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz is drawn from the winery's oldest vineyard, planted in 1875. It is a fitting tribute to the first Kalleske to migrate to Australia: Johann Georg Kalleske.
The ancient, gnarly, dry grown vines grow in sandy topsoils with excellent clay subsoil. They produce extremely low yields of fruit, which is all harvested by hand.
The grapes are destemmed into an open top fermenter. During two weeks of fermentation, a heading down screen is used to submerge the skin and ensure gentle extraction of colour and flavour.
Once pressed, the wine is immediately filled to new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. It remains in barrel for two years prior to bottling.
Opaque purple, Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz is full bodied and muscular, with fleshy dark fruits, finely textured tannins and a generous finish.
A sophisticated Barossa Shiraz. Cellaring potential is 15 years.
