Winery
Doug and Joy Bowen established Bowen Estate in 1972, purchasing land at the southern end of Coonawarra. Today the winery is still family owned and operated, with daughter Emma taking charge of the winemaking.
The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay, which thrive in Coonawarra's prime terra rossa soils and maritime ripening conditions. Each vine is hand pruned to restrict the crop size and trained to an arch cane trellis system, which improves evenness at budburst, bunch exposure and fruit ripeness. The result is balanced vines, producing quality fruit with distinct Coonawarra character: strong varietal aromas, big flavours and soft, balanced tannins.
Bowen Estate's Cabernet Sauvignon attests to Coonawarra's reputation for producing some of the best expressions of the variety in Australia. Their Shiraz and Chardonnay complete their range.
