Lured to Rutherglen by the goldrush, but failing to strike it rich, in 1870 John Campbell instead planted a vineyard. Today winemaker Colin Campbell and his brother, viticulturist Malcolm Campbell, are the fourth generation in the business.
Campbells is one of Rutherglen's original fortified producers. For their red and white wine production they use modern winemaking techniques. In complete contrast Campbells fortified cellar is the domain of ancient barrels nurturing their precious contents for decades of ageing to mellow maturity. A combination of climate, soil, grape variety, generations of experience, and the availability of very old stocks, put these wines in a class of their own.
Rutherglen's fortified wines are recognized as among Australia's gifts to the world. The Campbells Merchant Prince Muscat and Isabella Topaque lead. The Sixties Block Shiraz blend and their Sparkling Shiraz are also of note.
