Purchasing land on the Capel River, Dr Peter Pratten and wife Elizabeth established Capel Vale in 1974. Today it remains family owned and operated, with the torch handed to son Simon Pratten in 2007.
Capel Vale was the first family owned winery to have vineyards across several of Western Australia's wine regions – Geographe, Mount Barker and Margaret River. In each the vineyard is planted to varieties that match their distinct microclimate: Malbec and Merlot in Geographe; Riesling and Shiraz in Mount Barker; and Cabernet Sauvignon in Margaret River. They farm sustainably; guinea fowl are their pest controllers. The winemaking focuses on creating balance, complexity and elegance.
At Capel Vale, they make wines of distinct regional flavour, best revealed in the Single Vineyard series. Their Black Label wines, made only in select vintages, are also highlights.
