At the Winery
Winery
Established in 1969, Taltarni is one of the founding wineries in Victoria's Pyrenees. In 1972 John Goelet, a descendant of the Guestier wine merchant family of Bordeaux, purchased the vineyard. The winery is now a part of Goelet Wine Estates.
With this strong French influence, the initial plantings were Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. They were the first Australian winery to adopt what they call an 'insectarium' – a corridor of native plants that attracts beneficial insects to eat detrimental insects – into their viticulture. The rich soils of red clay, quartz and sandy loam create ideal growing conditions, while the cool nights and warm days foster slow ripening.
The leading The Patron Cabernet Shiraz best embodies the spirit of Taltarni. The Reserve and Estate Old Vine ranges follow, offering the big, bold red wines on which Taltarni was founded.
