In 1994 cardiologist Peter Thompson joined the legacy of medical doctors drawn to wine, he and wife Jane purchasing a property in Margaret River's Wilyabrup Valley. They planted Thompson Estate's first vines in 1997.
In the 1960s John Gladstone identified Margaret River's climate to be similar to Bordeaux. This is borne out in Thompson Estate's Wilyabrup vineyard, next door to Margaret River pioneers Vasse Felix. With the sea on three sides, maritime breezes keep the fruit cool even in the height of summer and add flavour intensity. They follow organic and selective biodynamic practices. Thompson Estate have made their wines at their own facilities since 2009.
Thompson Estate are best known for their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Specialist wines are the finest. The Estate wines follow, also made in a Cabernet Merlot and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc.
