Winery
Jason and Alecia Brown established Moppity Vineyards in 2004 when they purchased a 1973 vineyard in the emerging Hilltops region, boasting some of the oldest vines in southern New South Wales.
The Browns, looking to break away from the big, bruising style of Australian wines, were seduced by the site's cool climate, high elevation and old vines. At over 600 metres altitude, temperatures are warm during the day but plummet overnight, effectively turning off grape ripening to ensure vibrant flavour and acidity. The soils bear strong parallels to those of Côte Rôtie in Northern Rhône, gravelly and free draining with a proven synergy with Shiraz. Intensive viticulture produces low yields of quality fruit.
Moppity Vineyards signature style is expressive and medium bodied. Their Escalier Shiraz leads their Reserve range while the Lock & Key series represents quality at an affordable price.
