Winery
Poonawatta began as a small Shiraz vineyard planted by Ferdinand Vorwerk in the Eden Valley in 1880. In 1966 the Holt family acquired the vineyard, but it wasn't until 2002 that they released Poonawatta's first wine.
The original plantings are some of Australia's oldest Shiraz. The gnarled vines are hand tended, ensuring not just fruit quality, but the health of the vines. As well as Shiraz Poonawatta focus on Riesling, varieties synonymous with the Eden Valley. Biodiversity and sustainability underpin everything they do in the vineyards. Defined by the cool climate and late ripening grapes, Poonawatta's wines are an authentic expression of its age-old soils.
The 1880 Shiraz is a living reminder of Australian winemaking heritage, produced in limited quantities. The Eden Riesling, The Cuttings Shiraz and Valley of Eden Off-Dry Riesling also stand out.
