The 1880 Shiraz
Wine
Poonawatta The 1880 Shiraz is sourced from one of the last remaining vineyards of its era, and one of the oldest within Australia. It leads the Poonawatta range.
In the winter of 1880, Ferdinand Vorwerk planted 24 rows of Shiraz cuttings next to a small creek at Flaxman Valley, on the eastern side of the Eden Valley. Today less than 1,000 gnarled vines remain, producing tiny yields of fruit.
The fruit is handpicked in several small parcels, each vinified separately. After open fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barriques. Only the best parcels are selected to comprise the final blend.
Inky garnet, Poonawatta The 1880 Shiraz has powerful berry flavours, soft spice and a firm tannin finish. Cellaring potential is 10 years.
