Soumah is an acronym of 'South of Maroondah Highway' where the winery is located in the foothills of the Warramate Hills. Brett Butcher founded Soumah in 1997 with the aim of making wine (and food) in the northern Italian style.
Soumah's Hexham Vineyard in the Yarra Valley is the mainstay of production. Viticulture strikes a happy medium between conventional methods and the stricter demands of organic certification. They call it 'supervised control' – what the French call lutte raisonnée or 'reasoned fight' – with only limited use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Small parcels of quality outsourced fruit allow other single vineyard wines to be made.
The Equilibrio range leads, released in a Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay, followed by the Single Vineyard range. Soumah also specialize in wine styles and varieties typical of northern Italy, such as Nebbiolo.
