Winery
Tom and Nadege Carson established Serrat as their personal brand in 2001 having worked for Yering Station as chief winemaker and marketing manager respectively. Tom Carson’s day job has been chief winemaker for Yabby Lake Vineyard.
Serrat is named after the Catalonian word for high density planting. The vineyard is planted at 8,800 vines per hectare, more than four times the average density. It produces less than one bottle per vine. The soils – grey-brown clays with buckshot gravel evenly dispersed through the topsoil – are low in fertility, which engenders intense flavours in the fruit. At the winery, the intention is to truly reflect the vineyard site in the wine.
Serrat's vineyard management is not a new concept; rather it is the way the great vineyards of Europe have been run for hundreds of years. Serrat produces outstanding Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Shiraz Viognier and Grenache Noir.
