When Duke and Hilde Ranson founded Duke's Vineyard in 1999, it was intended to be their retirement plan. Instead it began their winemaking careers. Their curved mountain blue cladding cellar door, designed by Hilde, opened in 2002.
Looking out to the Stirling and Porongurup ranges in Great Southern, Duke's Vineyard sits 220 metres above sea level. Its cool climate and lateritic loam soils grow premium Riesling, but they also foster cool climate Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2022, Duke gave retirement a second go, selling the property and brand to winemaker Ben Crane and partner Sarah Date. They have added a selection of other varieties to the portfolio by way of invitational Western Australian vineyards.
Duke's Vineyard highlights are its Riesling, led by the Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling. The Morrissey, a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz, leads their reds. For the price, the quality is exceptional.
