Winery
Founded by brothers Frederick and Herbert Kay in 1890, Kay Brothers is the oldest winery in McLaren Vale still owned by its founding family. Colin Kay with siblings Alice and Bill, and daughter Elspeth, continue the family's involvement in the business.
The original Amery Vineyard lies on the rolling foothills of the southern Mount Lofty Ranges. Shiraz is the dominant planting. Sustainable practices build soil health, biodiversity and vine resilience. The winemaking is then a matter of preserving the flavours from the vineyard. Though their methods are traditional – they still use the original open fermenters and a heritage 1928 basket press – they produce wines of true McLaren Vale character.
Kay Brothers' Amery Vineyard Block 6 Shiraz, from a block planted in 1892, leads. Griffon's Key Reserve Grenache and Cuthbert Cabernet Sauvignon follow. The Basket Pressed range is the most affordable.
