After an extensive search for the ideal site, in 1997 Craig and Cathy Smith established Higher Plane in Forest Grove just south of the Margaret River township. In 2006 Juniper Estate acquired the winery, retaining the Higher Plane brand.

Located at the headwaters of Chapman Creek, Higher Plane's undulating vineyard has been planted to match varieties with their ideal soil and aspect. This ensures the Cabernet vines on their north facing slopes experience increased sun exposure and ripen fully, while trees shade their Chardonnay from the heat of the afternoon sun to maintain a high natural acidity. Higher Plane share a cellar door with Juniper Estate.

Higher Plane take a 'less is more' approach in the winery, making wines with delicacy, elegance and complexity. The Messenger, a Bordeaux blend, and the Reserve Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are the highlights.
