Geologist turned vigneron Dr John Davis established Briar Ridge in 1988, purchasing a vineyard at Mount View in the Hunter Valley. In 2010 daughter Jaclyn Davis joined the winery; today she is the owner.
Off the Hunter Valley's beaten track, slopes of red, limestone rich soils are home to Briar Ridge's Dairy Hill, Briar Hill and Red Hill Vineyards. More elevated than typical Hunter Valley sites, the steep undulating slopes enjoy milder temperatures and cool breezes from the Mount View Ranges. Briar Ridge also has estate grown vineyards in Orange and Hilltops in New South Wales, and Wrattonbully in South Australia.
Briar Ridge's best Hunter Valley fruit is selected for its Single Vineyard range. The Stockhausen range, overseen by Hunter Valley winemaking veteran Karl Stockhausen, is also notable.
