Attending a dinner party in Victoria, Queensland entrepreneur Terry Morris listened to his friends say, "There's no such thing as great wine from Queensland". This was the spark that led Morris to found Sirromet in 1998.
While Sirromet's location halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast is a magnet for visitors, their vineyard operations centre around the Granite Belt. It has some of Australia's highest altitude plantings in an ideal grape growing climate of cold winters, spring frosts and mild summers.
Under Mike Hayes, self-taught local Ballandean winemaker and the first Queenslander to be named Winemaker of the Year, Sirromet began branching out into heat-adapted southern European varieties more suited to the warming climate. Jessica Ferguson and Glen Eaton now take care of the winemaking.
Sirromet has helped place Queensland wines on the national stage. Their Private Collection LM Reserve Assemblage leads. The Granit range explores alternative and emerging varieties.
