Gary and Robyn Farr founded By Farr in the Moorabool Valley in the Geelong region in 1994. Their son Nick later joined the winery with his own label, Farr Rising, and in 2009 assumed all winemaking duties.

The Moorabool Valley has a cool, maritime affected climate with prevailing winds from the western plains, which keep the vines on edge. On ancient river deposits, the soils contain volcanic loam over limestone. Well drained and for the most part, of low fertility, they are optimal sites for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which grow alongside plantings of Viognier, Gamay and Shiraz. Patience and fastidious attention to detail characterize the winemaking.

By Farr sets an outstanding quality benchmark. Their leading single vineyard wines include Tout Près Pinot Noir, Sangreal Pinot Noir, RP Côte Vineyard Pinot Noir and GC Côte Vineyard Chardonnay.
