At the Winery

In 1891 Scotsman John Riddoch planted the vineyards and soon after built his iconic three gabled winery. In 1951 Melbourne wine merchants Samuel and David Wynn purchased Riddoch's then rundown winery, renaming it Wynns Coonawarra Estate.
Today owned by Treasury Wine Estates, Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the largest single vineyard holder in Coonawarra. John Riddoch had noticed the fertility of the small strip of terra rossa soil in the far south-east of South Australia. Just 80 kilometres inland from the Southern Ocean, cool Antarctic winds ensure a long ripening period that builds intense flavours and balanced acidity. Under viticulturist Allen Jenkins and winemaker Sue Hodder, Wynns Coonawarra Estate is a benchmark producer.
Wynns Coonawarra Estate produces two flagships: John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon and Michael Shiraz. The single vineyard wines are made from the top performing Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards each year. At the next tier is their V&A Lane range.
