Winery
To a vigneron, an east facing slope with limestone speaks softly but urgently of a need to plant vines. Heeding its call in 1988 Dr Edgar Riek and Mrs Dinny Killen established Mount Majura Vineyard, pioneering the Canberra wine region.
Mount Majura Vineyard lies near the top of the Majura Valley, just outside the city of Canberra. Rising to 700 metres altitude, the slopes drain away spring frosts. With a continental climate akin to Ribera del Duero in Spain, Tempranillo has become Mount Majura's keynote variety. Focusing on soil health, Mount Majura use a light hand to let the quality come naturally.
Mount Majura's longstanding winemaker Dr Frank van de Loo gives the vineyard a voice, best shown in their single block Tempranillos Dry Spur, Little Dam and Rock Block. The Riesling and Shiraz are other highlights.
