At the Winery
Winery
Claudio Alcorso founded Moorilla in 1947, the second winery to be established in Tasmania. David Walsh, founder of Hobart's Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), bought the property in 1995.
Moorilla sits on Frying Pan Island, a small peninsula in the Derwent River near Hobart just one metre above sea level. As well as their Frying Pan Island vineyard, Moorilla owns the St. Matthias Vineyard on the Tamar River at Launceston. In both vineyards the fruit is grown in a sustainable manner, applying both organic and biodynamic techniques. Under Walsh's direction, Moorilla mirrors MONA's philosophy and encourages the senses to be engaged.
Moorilla focuses on small, high quality, artisan output. The premium Cloth Label range showcases striking vineyard blends; the Muse honours old world traditions; while the Praxis range is a Tasmanian take on new world winemaking.
