Port Phillip Estate was established in 1987 and acquired by Giorgio and Dianne Gjergja in 2000. Their landmark building, designed by Wood Marsh Architects as the home of both Port Phillip Estate and Kooyong, opened in 2009.
At 100 metres above sea level, the vineyards feel the cool maritime climate of the Mornington Peninsula. With infertile but free draining sedimentary soil they are naturally low yielding. Port Phillip Estate practice permaculture to improve vine health, foregoing chemicals and instead using compost and mulch. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay predominate, growing in the suntraps formed by the undulating slopes. At the winery minimal intervention encourages the wines to express both site and season.
Port Phillip Estate's highlights include Red Hill Pinot Noir, Serenne Shiraz and Red Hill Chardonnay. Wines bottled under the Port Phillip label are entirely estate grown, while the Quartier range draws fruit from nearby vineyards.
