The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine
Jim Barry The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on the estate's original Shiraz vineyard, planted by Jim Barry in 1964. The wine is named after the lost township of Benbournie, just outside Clare.
Benbournie was settled in 1853 by Catholic German friends of the local priest, Father Kranewitter. Founded on copper mining, the town died as the industry declined. All that remains are a few ancient vines, fig and almond trees.
The Cabernet grapes benefit from the Clare Valley's Mediterranean climate and high winter rainfall. The winemaking thinking is simple: grow the best fruit in the vineyard and retain its flavours through to the bottle.
After pressing, the wine matures in French and American oak for at least 12 months prior to bottling.
Inky purple, Jim Barry The Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is intensely aromatic with generous dark fruit flavours and long, minerally tannins. Cellaring potential is 15 years.
