1987 Grange

Vintage reviews

Sourced from the Barossa Valley (including Kalimna Vineyard) and McLaren Vale. Shiraz (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%).

Growing season and vintage were both marked by cool weather. Crops in most South Australian regions were reduced by hailstorms in October 1986.

Aged in new American oak hogsheads for 18 months.

92/100

A youthful opaque purple color and a tight but promising nose of jammy cassis with a touch of prunes and smoky oak, are followed by a backward, full-bodied, typical Grange that requires 5–6 more years of cellaring.

This huge, lavishly-oaked, unevolved wine is an outstanding effort with 20 years of aging potential.
