In 1979, at the height of South Australia's Vine Pull Scheme, Neil and Lorraine Ashmead were offered a derelict vineyard free with the purchase of their home. Deciding to restore the vines they released Elderton's first wines in 1982.
On the banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa their Barossa vineyard has two standout blocks: the original Command Shiraz Block planted in 1894 and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon Block planted in 1944. Now in the hands of the Ashmead's next generation – sons Cameron and Allister – Elderton has acquired the Craneford Eden Valley and Greenock Barossa Valley vineyards. Elderton focus on sustainable production, low yields and minimal inputs.
Elderton's Elite range includes their lead wines Command Shiraz and Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon. With wines at all price points, they also release the Exceptional Single Sites, Estate Family Vineyards and E-Series ranges.
