In the mid-2000s, auctioneer David Fowles put down his gavel to focus on viticulture and winemaking, establishing Fowles Wine. Today his son Matt, a lawyer who swapped the courtroom for the vineyard, is in charge.

Fowles Wine is set in the dramatic granite landscape of Victoria's Strathbogie Ranges. Their Upton Run and Billi's Vineyards are on rolling plateaux 430-550 metres above sea level. North of the Great Dividing Range the days are warm and the nights cool, allowing the fruit to gradually ripen. The soils of decomposed granite are free draining and nutrient poor, resulting in low yields but intense flavours. In the winery minimal intervention is the rule.

The Fowles Wine wines reveal their cool climate home, with light, minerally whites and powerful yet elegant reds. The quirky Ladies who Shoot their Lunch range includes a Shiraz, Riesling and Chardonnay.
