Winery

In 1978 Sue and Dave Carpenter established Lark Hill on the escarpment above Bungendore north-east of Canberra. In 2002 their son Chris joined the winery, implementing Rudolph Steiner's biodynamic practices.

Lark Hill sits at one of the Canberra District's highest and coldest points. In 2004, on the advice of wine critic Jancis Robinson, they planted Australia's first Grüner Veltliner; today it thrives alongside traditional cool climate varieties. Their lower altitude Dark Horse Vineyard at Murrumbateman is warmer. Managed biodynamically, the vineyards are treated as a living organism. Minimal intervention winemaking translates the quality of the fruit into the wines.

Pioneers of the variety in Australia, Lark Hill's Grüner Veltliner is sought after. Their single vineyard Pinot Noir and Riesling are also highlights, as is the Canberra Region Riesling.
