Fleeing war torn Czechoslovakia in 1950, Josef Chromy immigrated to Australia. Instrumental in developing Tasmania's wine industry, most recently, in 2007 aged 76, the Josef Chromy label. In 2022 Endeavour Group acquired ownership.
The winery is set around a picturesque lake on rolling hills at Relbia south of Launceston. The maritime climate is free from extremes, which provides idyllic grape growing conditions. Josef Chromy faces the challenges of the cool Tasmanian climate with sustainable low input viticulture. Only minimal intervention is required at the winery. Josef Chromy are one of Tasmania's most technically advanced wineries, applying their technical capability to traditional winemaking practices.
Josef Chromy's range includes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and several expressions of Riesling, all revealing the delicate flavours of vineyard and vintage. In exceptional years parcels from single blocks are bottled separately.
