Winery
Inspired by their travels in France, Bertel and Anne Sundstrup established Dalrymple at Pipers River in north-east Tasmania in 1987. In 2007 Hill Smith Family Vineyards acquired the winery and in 2010 Peter Caldwell became the vigneron.
At 41 degrees latitude, Dalrymple has similar conditions to those in Burgundy in France. Its sloping hills overlook Bass Strait, with sea breezes moderating temperatures and ripening the grapes evenly, while stands of eucalypts protect the vines. These are perfect conditions for Pinot Noir. For Peter Caldwell, 'Pinosity' – an unnatural enthralment with Pinot Noir – is at the centre of Dalrymple. Indeed the condition stretches beyond their estate vineyard to sites throughout Tasmania.
Dalrymple capitalizes on Tasmania's affinity for Pinot Noir, producing four single site examples: Coal River Valley, Ouse, Swansea and their own Cottage Block at Pipers River. They also make Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
