After a degree in ancient Greek literature, to postpone his entry into the workforce Rory Lane enrolled in a winemaking course. Now the Fates – the Moirai in Greek mythology – were in charge. In 2004 he established The Story Wines.

Located in the southern suburbs of Melbourne, Rory Lane is an urban winemaker without a vineyard. His focus is Shiraz and several other Rhône varieties (Marsanne, Roussanne and Viognier) sourced from the Grampians, notably the Morris family's Westgate Vineyard. He also draws from other Victorian regions such as Henty, Whitlands, Port Campbell and Nagambie. His winemaking is simple and hands off, with an emphasis on acidity and freshness.

The Story Wines premium R. Lane Vintners label is kept for outstanding years. Other highlights include the Grampians Syrah, Whitlands Close Planted Riesling and Westgate Vineyard Marsanne Roussanne Viognier.
